    PD issues burglary prevention tips

By taking a few simple precautions, residential and vehicle burglaries can be significantly reduced.
Make your home look occupied…. and make it difficult to break in:

    1. Lock all windows and outside doors before you leave or go to bed.

    2. Leave lights on when you go out. A radio or a television playing is also a good burglar deterrent.

    3. Keep your garage door closed and locked…. an empty garage is a good sign that no one is home.

    4. Don’t allow daily deliveries to accumulate when you’re gone. Cancel them in person or by phone or ask a neighbor to take in the mail, and newspapers during your absence.

    5. Contact your local police department and have a trained person inspect your home and make suggestions on how to make it more secure.

    6. Never leave door keys under flower pots, doormats, inside unlocked mailboxes or in any other “secret” hiding places…. burglars know them all.

    7. If you’re going on vacation….
    a. Notify the police and tell them how long you’ll be gone, tell them where you can be reached. (provide a valid telephone number to call you in case of emergency)
    b. If you feel comfortable ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your home. Leave someone you trust a key so your home can be periodically inspected. Also, ask them to vary the positions of shades and blinds from day to day.

    8. Keep a detailed inventory of all your personal possessions. Include a description of the item, date of purchase, original value and any serial numbers. Give your insurance agent a copy of your list and keep an additional one in a safe place outside your home, such as a safety deposit box. It’s a good idea to make a photographic record of your belongings especially valuable ones like antiques and jewelry.

    Secure your vehicle!

    1. Keep your vehicle locked at all times. Don’t make it easy for a burglar to get into your vehicle by giving them immediate access.

    2. Don’t leave valuable items inside your vehicle; if this is unavoidable secure the item in your trunk or keep them out of sight. The most common items taken from vehicles are IPODs and GPS systems; these items are small and easy to conceal.

You can assist the Killeen Police Department and its burglary prevention effort by insuring that all valuables have been properly marked and serial and model numbers have been recorded.
